The days are longer and we’re all itching to enjoy the sunshine when the sun comes out from behind the clouds. Spring is generally too snowy and icy on our favorite wilderness trails for hiking and the ski resorts are slushy in the afternoon and soon to be shutting down. What is a local to do?
The days are longer and we’re all itching to enjoy the sunshine when the sun comes out from behind the clouds. Spring is generally too snowy and icy on our favorite wilderness trails for hiking and the ski resorts are slushy in the afternoon and soon to be shutting down. What is a local to do?One of the favorite spring pastimes for many of our locals and visitors alike is disc golf. Lake Tahoe’s elevation in the basin is approximately 6200ft in elevation and unlike the mountains that surround us, the snow melts off quickly after the storms in the spring as the days are warmer and longer.
There are 8 disc golf courses in the Lake Tahoe basin. Our favorite course is located right here in South Lake Tahoe at Bijou Community Park. It was established in 1999 and is a beautiful 27 hole course. Golf enthusiasts give it a 4.06 rating out of 5. The course is located at Bijou Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard between Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Pioneer Trail. If you’ve never tried the sport before, it is best to go to a sports store and buy a disc specifically for disc golf. A normal Frisbee is lighter and won’t go as far as the disc golf discs can go. At each tee off there will be a par sign and a diagram of where the basket is – this sport is basically golf but with a disc!
It is a relaxing and fun way to spend an afternoon and Bijou Park has some great places to picnic afterwards as well as a dog park, skate park, basketball hoops, volleyball court, BMX track and playground. Bijou Community Park has free parking and all the amenities are free as well. So go outside and enjoy the lovely spring weather that Tahoe has to offer!
